Two years ago, a small, privately-run ship set out to lend a hand to military operations rescuing boat migrants off Libya. Today, there are a dozen such aid ships engaged in over 20 percent of life-saving missions. The first step was made by Christopher and Regina Catrambone, a wealthy Italian-American couple based in Malta aghast at the shipwreck off the island of Lampedusa in October 2013 which left over 365 people dead.

E’ approdata stamani a Trapani la nave di Save the Children con a bordo 125 migranti, tra cui la bimba di 15 mesi che durante la traversata ha perso la mamma. La piccola è stata salvata da altre donne presenti sul gommone che l’hanno così salvata da una morte sicura. A bordo della nave ci sono anche 25 minori, di cui 21 non accompagnati, cinque bambini e diverse donne incinte, oltre a quattro cadaveri. Tra i corpi senza vita anche quello della madre della piccola orfana. Diverse le persone con ustioni e ferite profonde.
